Empowering Your Child's Success: A Guide to Right to Read and Literary Resources

As parents and caregivers, we share the common goal of nurturing our children's success and helping them unlock their full potential. One indispensable way to achieve this is by fostering a love for reading and literacy from a young age. At today's Tea, Talk and Lemonade session, the conversation highlighted the shift in ministry focus on literacy (using sounds instead of "sight words").

Here are some of the companies our educators recommend:

  • Flyleaf Publishing: Renowned for their high-quality children's books, Flyleaf Publishing offers a diverse range of titles covering science, nature, history, and culture. From captivating picture books to enriching chapter books, Flyleaf's collection caters to a broad spectrum of young readers.
  • Dandelion Launchers: For children developing their phonics skills, Dandelion Launchers provides phonics-based reading books designed to enhance literacy. With books tailored to different reading levels, children can progress at their own pace, building a strong foundation in phonics.
  • Half-Pint Kids: Specializing in books for young children, Half-Pint Kids creates interactive and vibrant stories that capture the imagination. With colorful illustrations and engaging narratives, their books cover various topics, fostering a love for learning from an early age.
  • SyllaSense: Taking a unique approach to teaching reading, SyllaSense employs the Syllabics system, breaking down words into manageable syllables. This method is especially beneficial for children facing challenges in reading, offering accessible and comprehensible content.
  • Scholastic Phonics: A well-established name in children's literature, Scholastic Phonics provides a diverse range of phonics-based reading books suitable for children of all ages. Their collection covers a wide array of topics, ensuring there's something for every young reader.

And as a reminder, students have access to Destiny Discover through the BYOD Portal, which allow them to continue reading and listening to books from the comfort of home. Here's a simple guide on how to access Destiny Discover:

  • Go to the PDSB BYOD portal. Click on the Library planet.
  • Login in the top right corner using your STUDENT NUMBER for both the username and password.
  • Click on the Destiny Discover icon.
  • Scroll down and click on Stanley Mills Public School.
  • Welcome to the Destiny Discover home page - Happy exploring!

By combining the power of these recommended companies and utilizing accessible platforms like Destiny Discover, we can collectively nurture a love for reading in our children, setting them on a path to success. Together, let's empower our children through the gift of literacy.

Tea, Talk and Lemonade - Friday, Nov. 17th

Parents and Caregivers ~ please pass it on!

Our first Tea, Talk and Lemonade will be this Friday at 8:45AM in the staff room, and you are invited to attend!

This kick-off chat will cover some of the topics requested from the recent survey conducted.

What is Tea, Talk and Lemonade?

It is an initiative aimed at welcoming parents, caregivers and grandparents to drop in and explore some school resources. The agenda for these chats are fluid; meaning they are primarily structured around what parents want to talk about or get insight on. This is facilitated by the Stanley Mills staff, and is a great opportunity for the community to be heard.

Do you have a topic you would like insight into? Or have a question you would like covered? Please send us an email!

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Sept. 29

Since September 30 falls on a weekend, on September 29, 2023 students are encouraged to wear Orange to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. If you are interested in purchasing Orange Shirts, we encourage you to support an Indigenous artist or organization. Here are some organizations to consider:

The following resources can support learning more about the legacy of residential schools:

First launched in 2013 in Williams Lake, Orange Shirt Day commemorates the history and the legacy of Residential Schools, and the strength and fortitude of Residential School Survivors and their descendants. The day was officially recognized by the federal government when Bill C-5 received royal assent by the Canadian Parliament on June 3, 2021. This national day ensures the opportunity to recognize and remember the harmful impact that the legacy of colonialism has on Indigenous culture and sovereignty through the Residential School System, which more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were forced to attend between the 1870s and 1997.

Update to Kiss and Ride Lane - Effective Sept. 18

Please be advised that effective Monday, September 18th, the dedicated Kiss and Ride Lane at the side of Stanley Mills PS will be closed in the afternoon for pick up. For the safety of the students, please park your car on the road and/or walk to pick up your child.

As a friendly reminder, due to the heavy volume of two-way traffic on Sunny Meadow Blvd, it is imperative that drivers obey posted traffic signs including the two "No Left Turn" signs at the end of the school driveway. Prohibited turns can result in accidents or worse.

Please be advised that illegal left turns in Ontario may carry a fine of $110 and two demerit points. While we appreciate how difficult it can be to navigate the rush of cars in the morning and afternoon, the safety of our students and their families is our number one priority.

Please continue to talk to your child(ren) about road safety regarding drop-offs and pick-ups.

If you have any concerns or feedback, please email us!
